Fourth Grade Thank You
The fourth graders in both classes would like to thank Sam's mom, Kelly Jones, for teaching us about Pop Art and the artist Andy Warhol.  It was a great experience to have a guest artist in our classroom.

Unique Opportunity
Mrs. Cornejo has invited the two fourth grade classes to join her fifth grade class for their annual Civil War Day.  This event will take place during the third week in May.  Parent volunteers will be needed, I will keep you posted.  In thinking about that date, there is an opportunity for your family to experience a Civil War reenactment!  The event is free and is taking place this weekend.

Spelling and Memory
Our Spelling and Memory words will run out before our school year.  Fear not, I have a plan.  Fourth graders will choose the memory work they want to be in charge of from an approved set of hymn verses.  Committing hymns to memory has great value.  For Spelling, students will choose words from a list of commonly misspelled words from their age level.  Later, we will use the vocab from our Lit Sets for our Spelling List.  We will still be completing a contract worth 40 points for the words.

Upcoming Tests
There will be a Math test on Friday, May 6.

Chapel Success
I would like to thank all of the fourth graders for a job well done with our Easter Chapel.  I heard many nice comments from the school and staff.  The fourth graders did a great job witnessing to their peers about Christ's resurrection.

Guest Speaker
Fourth grade will enjoy a guest speaker on May 6.  Dr. Garvey will be visiting our classroom to talk to us about his profession.

Baby Bobcat
Mr. Matyas and I are pleased to announce that we are expecting a baby in early November!  Olivia is pleased to be a big sister.  I am planning on staying at home next year as our family continues to grow.  I find great joy in teaching and am excited to take on the role as a full-time mommy.  We are blessed to have the opportunity.

Upcoming Tests
The fourth graders will have an English test on Tuesday, April 19 and a Missouri History  Test on Wednesday, April 20.

Science Projects
We are learning about Energy this month in Science.  To help the kids gain hands on experience, they have created Rube Goldberg machines.  These inventions perform a simple task through a series of energy transfers.  We are looking forward to testing our inventions on Wednesday, April 20.  Ask your student about his or her invention!

Research Papers
We are continuing are work on the Research Paper.  The first rough has been written and the next step is typing the outline.  Keeping excited about the research paper can be a chore for some fourth graders.  Persistence and perseverance are the key to success for this project.

Marble Jar Party
The fourth graders have earned another Marble Jar Party which will be celebrated on Friday, April 15.  We will vote on the movie that we will see later this week.  Students may bring in snacks to share for the party.

Research Paper Continues
We have completed the note cards and the outline.  We are moving on to creating the Bibliography page and starting a first draft.  Keep asking your student about their research project.  It is a project that takes quite a bit of time and effort over a long period.  Keep in mind that it is still fourth grade, they will have plenty of opportunity to hone their skills later in their academic career.  The purpose is to get their feet wet and learn to appreciate that writing a paper of this magnitude is a process.

Upcoming Tests
We will have a Math test on Friday, April 15, and an English test on Monday, April 18.

Thank You
I want to send a belated thank you to all families who purchased books for our classroom from the Book Fair last month.  I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the parents, grandparents and friends of my classroom.  Your gift is greatly appreciated.  All of the books that I "wished for" were bought.

April Book Report
Our April book project will be Literature Sets.  The students participated in Lit. Sets last semester.  The date for beginning the Lit. Set has not yet been determined.  It may be later in the month and carry over to May.  I know the students enjoyed the experience the last time we did it and I look forward to another batch of great reading.
