Thank You
Thank you for all of the birthday well wishes and gifts for my birthday. It is very flattering to have such caring students.
Nutrition Recipe
In Health class we are learning about nutrition. On Monday, students should bring in a recipe of a favorite nutritious snack. If they want, students can bring in a sample to share with the class for extra credit. Students will have access to a refrigerator and a microwave.
Cleaning Out Desks
We will be cleaning out our desks on Wednesday. Make sure students bring empty book bags to school or an extra paper bag to take home all of the end of the year things.
A safe place for students and parents to see what is going on in Mrs. Matyas's classroom.

Luck
We had a short discussion about luck today in class, this being Friday, May 13. Rest assured the Christian faith rests no weight in luck either good or bad. Though superstitions abound in our culture, we place all bets on the Good News of the Gospel.
Upcoming Tests
There will be a Social Studies Test on Friday, May 20. The test will cover Chapter 10 and 12. Students should know and be able to label SW and Western States. We will also have an English test that covers Unit 8 on Monday, May 23.
Civil War Day
Our Civil War Day is Monday, May 16. A number of parents have volunteered their time, it is appreciated. All parents are invited to the morning session from 8:30-10:15. We will meet in the basement of the church and will be hearing from a number of Civil War experts.
Field Trip Chaperones
I would like to thank Mrs. Purnell and Mrs. Hopp for joining us on Thursday for our field trip to the Old Court House and the Arch. It was a great trip, thank you for helping us.
Pinata Creations
After 6 layers of paper mache we will be ready to decorate our pinatas on Tuesday, May 17. Please bring any supplies you will need for your pinata on Tuesday. Ideas include crepe paper, tissue paper, Easter grass, feathers, ribbons, googly eyes, etc.
Library Sale
The Zion library book sale will take place on Tuesday May 24. Please see the Banner for further details.

Guest Speaker Appreciation
The fourth grade would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Garvey for visiting our classroom and telling us all about orthodontics. Their presentation was quite informative and entertaining!
Field Trip Chaperone Needed
I am in need of one more chaperone for our field trip to the Arch and Old Courthouse on Thursday, May 12. Michelle Prunell has already agreed to go. You will need to bring a sack lunch. The field trip lasts the whole school day. Let me know if you are interested.
Upcoming Tests
We will have a religion test and an open book Health test that covers Chapter 2. Both tests will be on Tuesday, May 10.
Civil War Day Volunteers Needed
Thank you to Mrs. Skerston and Mrs. Schmidt for agreeing to help with the Civil War day on Monday, May 16. Mrs. Cornejo is still looking for some helpful parent volunteers to pitch in for the afternoon. Please email Mrs. Cornejo and let her know that you are available to help. kcornejo@zionharvester.org
Tin Cans Needed
Each fourth grader will need to bring in a tin can (the ones that vegetables come in). They should be cleaned out with no lid or paper on it. If you have extra tin cans feel free to bring another in. Each student needs one (50 students total) and some are sure to forget.
Spelling Bee
The 2-4 grade Spelling Bee will be hosted at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 20. I would like to congratulate Sam and Caroline for winning our classroom Spelling Bee. They will be our classroom candidates. Elizabeth earned the position as our classroom alternate. If Sam or Caroline our not able to fulfill their duties, Elizabeth will represent our class.
